Istvan Nyitrai sentenced for stealing mirrors from council owned toilets

A South Burnett man was ordered to pay compensation to the South Burnett Regional Council after stealing mirrors from the walls of a public toilet.

Istvan Nyitrai, 48, pleaded guilty to one charge of stealing on Thursday at Kingaroy Magistrates Court.

Police Prosecutor Barry Stevens said Nyitrai entered the Barambah Bush Caravan Park female toilets on April 23.

“He removed a mirror from the wall of the disabled cubicle and then two more mirrors using a drill,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“A witnesses saw his partner walking out with something under her towel.”

The court heard Nyitrai put the mirrors in his vehicle and took them home.

“Police attended the defendant’s home and found them at the head of his bed,” Sergeant Stevens said.

Nyitrai, who represented himself said, “upon reflection it was a pretty stupid thing to do”.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said he took Nyitrai’s early plea into consideration but compensation must be paid to the council.

Nyitrai was fined $250 and ordered to pay $404 to the council.

Convictions were recorded.
