Kathy Duff has delivered a report card on her council following its first six months in office, declaring it had already carried out one of the biggest road resealing programs in its history. Vote in our poll on the council’s performance so far:

Ms Duff highlighted the council’s commitment to a “back to basics” approach, with a focus on ensuring an equitable distribution of Works for Queensland (W4Q) funding across all areas of the region.

She said the shift had allowed each councillor to advocate for projects specific to their communities.

An increased focus on road maintenance and pothole repairs was noted.

Ms Duff said her council had delivered one of the largest reseal programs in the region’s history.

She also noted improvements in the phone system, with calls redirected to local area offices to improve service.

Additionally, a “red and green tape” reduction working group has been established to streamline processes and enhance efficiency, her report stated.

“The streamlining and call for more efficiencies has flowed through to an increased emphasis on growing and supporting the council workforce rather than engaging outside consultants,” she said.

“We want to grow and empower our own local workforce.”

Water quality remained a priority, with the council funding air scouring for Kingaroy pipes and exploring long-term solutions like reverse osmosis for the region’s water treatment plants.

To help mitigate the housing and homelessness crisis, she said the council has adopted a Housing Action Plan and partnered with Regional Housing to deliver new units, with plans for further developments.

Ms Duff mentioned a recent forum on youth crime, which brought together stakeholders to discuss potential solutions, and efforts to attract more GPs to the region.

Tourism and economic development were also on the agenda, with the council partnering with BIEDO and Visit South Burnett to support local businesses and boost tourism.

Ms Duff said the upcoming state election was an opportunity for the council to push for stronger regional representation.

Reflecting on the past six months, she said it had been “wonderful” to be part of the new team.

“I am grateful for the support of my fellow councillors, the CEO, senior staff and the whole council workforce,” she said.

“I am humbled and honoured to continue to serve this beautiful region as your Mayor.”
