The Kingaroy Waste Facility is facing operational challenges due to a lightning strike early Tuesday morning after a series of thunderstorms that swept through the South Burnett region.
The South Burnett Regional Council said the strike caused significant electrical damage to a pole and the facility’s weighbridge, making it inoperable.
As a result of the damage the weighbridge will not be able to accurately measure incoming landfill loads.
A council spokesman said this would force them leading to use deemed weights for commercial vehicles, regardless of whether vehicles are fully loaded or partially filled.
The council said in a s statement commercial customers may want to consider either postponing their waste disposal until the weighbridge is fully operational, or transport their waste to the nearby Nanango or Wondai facilities where the weighbridges are functioning.
It apologied for the inconvenience and urged the community to be patient as they work with suppliers and electricians to rectify the situation.
Repairs are anticipated to be completed by the close of business on Thursday, October 10, although this timeline may be adjusted based on unforeseen circumstances.
