Two years of a pandemic didn’t stop Kingaroy commemorating Anzac Day, so a few rain showers certainly weren’t going to do it this year.
It seemed half the town lined the streets and parks to watch the parade march by before the commemoration service at Memorial Park, and leading the march were two rising leaders.
Kingaroy State High School captain Joe Meikle and St Mary’s Catholic College captain Jack Torrens were given the honour of leading the parade and carry flags from the RSL to the cenotaph.
For Joe, it’s a moment he says he’ll never forget.
“It gave me goosebumps when I found out at school that I was going to be doing this, and I got goosebumps when I was walking today,” Joe said.
“To represent my community, the fallen soldiers and what the Anzac spirit means by holding the flag at the front of leaving the parade, it was honestly it was a surreal moment.”
With an aunt and an uncle who served in the navy, as well as a great-great-uncle who participated in the landing at Gallipoli, Joe said he would never forget the moment.
The boys were gifted the flags they carried as a thanks and acknowledgment of their leadership, with Joe over the moon with the gift.
“I’m still thinking about what I’m going to with it, but it’s going to be centre of attention,” he said.
It was a strong crowd at the Memorial Park, with hundreds of residents, including a strong cohort of children, came to pay their respects.
