The South Burnett Regional Council has moved to expand the region’s largest cemetery, with estimates suggesting the current area will be filled within three years.

At its general meeting on August 25, the council unanimously voted to approve a motion to inform the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the council’s intent to expand the Taabinga Cemetery on the outskirts of Kingaroy.

The cemetery, located off the Bunya Hwy, comprises 8.09 hectares of land – but presently DAF Kingaroy is conducting farming activity over approximately 3ha of the land.

A report tendered to the council revealed there was approximately 180 lawn plots remaining in the current are of the cemetery, first used in 1901, which is estimated to last the region for another two to three years.

The council’s 10-year capital works program includes more $80,000 in funding set aside for the improvement and expansion of the cemetery.

The report noted DAF staff had already been made aware informally of the council's intent.

It’s unclear when the works would begin, but the council officer’s report noted that once the land was “made good and cleared”, the council will install a perimeter fence, undertake a formal survey and prepare a master plan for the remainder of the cemetery reserve.
