A mother has revealed the gut-wrenching call that revealed her precious son and her parents were involved a horror North Burnett crash that claimed the life of her mother and devastated her family.

Hervey Bay woman Fionna Brogan was driving to New Moonta to spend the weekend with her family when her life was changed forever.

Fionna’s mother Jaras Brogan, 54, was killed instantly in a rollover between Mount Perry and Gin Gin just after 3pm on Friday, July 9.

Bryceson, 9, and Fionna’s father were seriously injured.

“I was halfway there when I got a phone call from the doctors to say Bryceson was in a coma,” Ms Brogan said.

“It took me about four hours to get there, but the minute I found out and made my way down, he woke up straight away.

“They said it was a miracle.”

Ms Brogan said Bryceson was sitting in the back seat when his grandfather swerved to avoid a truck on Gin Gin Mount Perry Road before rolling down an embankment.

“My mum died instantly. My dad, he couldn't walk, but they said they found him crawling towards my son because he was screaming in the back seat,” Ms Brogan said.

“He was trying to yell out for my son to stay calm.”

Ms Brogan said truck drivers ran to help and tried to force open the car door with a crowbar, but were unable to get the little boy out of the car.

Little Bryceson was stuck in the car for four hours before emergency services were able to free him.

He was flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

Despite Bryceson suffering a broken leg, fractured hip, bruised lung, fractured head, and black eye from the impact of his glasses, his mother said he had been extraordinarily strong.

Ms Brogan said she broke the news to Bryceson last Friday that his beloved grandmother hadn’t survived the crash, and he’s been fighting hard to get out of hospital ever since.

“He’s pushing himself really hard and keeps trying to walk. He’s fighting because he just wants to go and see his grandad,” she said.

The family will stay in Brisbane until Bryceson’s leg is on track for rehabilitation, but Ms Brogan said they have a long journey ahead of them once they return home.

“At the start, he’ll only be able to do half days at school. He might not even be able to go to school straight away,” she said.

“We’re just worried about money at the moment. We’re wondering, ‘how do we afford his physio? How do we get him the best care?’”

Ms Brogan, who started a new job just a month ago, said she faces the challenge of juggling her working hours while caring for her son.

She said the ordeal had been lessened through the incredible medical staff who have been by their sides.

“I just want to thank the hospital. I want to thank the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, the physio staff and all the nurses who’ve helped care for my son,” Ms Brogan said.

“It’s just one of the best hospitals I’ve ever seen in my whole life.

“They work long hours and even though they're all wearing masks, I can still see that they’re trying to smile behind that mask. And they’re just keeping strong for my little man.”
