Award-winning journalist Sarah Greenhalgh has been named the new co-anchor of 7News Brisbane’s flagship 6.00pm bulletin, filling the role left open after Sharyn Ghidella’s sudden exit in July.

The Brisbane-born journalist, will join Max Futcher at the newsdesk starting Monday, 21 October.

Greenhalgh’s appointment follows months of speculation after Ghidella’s abrupt sacking, which shocked audiences after her 17-year tenure as one of Brisbane’s most iconic news presenters.

Returning to her roots at the Mount Coot-Tha studios, Greenhalgh brings a wealth of experience gained from reporting in over 20 countries during her 10-year career with Seven.

She has spent the last five years as a foreign correspondent, covering major global events including the war in Ukraine and the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquakes.

Her reporting has earned her prestigious accolades, including Walkley and Kennedy Awards, as well as a TV WEEK Logie nomination for her coverage of the earthquakes.

Most recently, Greenhalgh was part of the investigative team at 7News Spotlight, known for tackling hard-hitting stories.

“Coming home to my original 7News family is a huge thrill,” Greenhalgh said.

Veteran broadcaster Max Futcher, with over 30 years of experience, expressed his excitement at teaming up with Greenhalgh.

“I can’t wait for our viewers to get to know Sarah too, as we share the news that matters to them each weeknight,” he said.

Greenhalgh’s return marks a significant shift in 7News Brisbane, which has seen several leadership changes recently.

Long-time journalist Katrina Blowers has been promoted to Queensland Chief Reporter, while 10 News First Queensland’s executive editor Erin Edwards is set to rejoin Seven as Brisbane and Gold Coast News Director in 2025, just over a year after her high-profile departure.

Rumours had swirled in September when Greenhalgh was spotted at Seven’s Mount Coot-Tha studios, sparking speculation that she was in the running for the news director role.

However, it was later confirmed that Edwards would be taking the position in 2025. Greenhalgh, meanwhile, will focus on her new co-anchor duties while continuing her work with 7News Spotlight.

“Sharing people’s stories is my greatest passion, and I’m excited to not only deliver the nightly news to Queenslanders but also continue my investigative work with 7News Spotlight,” she said.
