A regional South West Queensland town is being recognised as an unmissable destination after it was short-listed for two categories in the upcoming Grey Nomad Tourism Awards.
The awards aim to recognise towns which cater to mature age visitors in an exemplary way. Thallon, in the Balonne Shire council area, is a finalist in the Best Grey Nomad Friendly Town category and the Best Festival or Event category for its highly-successful Pub Choir event held near the base of their famous muralled grain silos.
The town has previously won in the Best Grey Nomad Trail category in the 2022 awards.
The town won the award in 2022 for its Mungindi sculpture trail, and is now being recognised for its celebrated campgrounds at the base of the iconic muralled grain silos and its recent Pub Choir event.
Balonne Shire mayor Samantha O’Toole said that the award nominations were just another reason for travellers to visit the region.
“We’ve always known that our picturesque towns, rivers, landscapes and friendly charm provide a unique experience for tourists, but to have yet another recognition of this is outstanding news,” Ms O’Toole said.
“We are so proud of what our region has to offer, and these award nominations are just another reason for travellers to come and visit our beautiful part of the world.”
Ms O’Toole also said that the region is investing in tourist experiences in Thallon, to complement its natural assets.
“As a council we recently finalised a $220,000 upgrade of the McGeever Recreational Campgrounds at the base of the iconic muralled grain silos in Thallon to improve the camping experience for our travelling visitors,” she said.
“The new, modern amenities and facilities in Thallon really do add to the region’s unique natural beauty, vibrant communities, and rich history.”
