A 23-year-old Roma man has been fined $2000 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of going armed to cause fear.

Bowdie Steven Richard Delaney appeared in the Roma Magistrates Court on June 25, and pleaded guilty to all three charges.

Police prosecutor Ellysha Geddes told the court Delaney was arrested on May 5, after police were called to an Injune address where he was reportedly swinging an axe around.

Ms Geddes said Delaney had been drinking at a friend’s house, and had gotten upset when the friend asked him to leave.

Eventually Delaney did leave, but returned 10 minutes later wielding an axe.

Ms Geddes said police charged Delaney with going armed so as to cause fear and brought him to the police station.

She said once he was brought to the police station, Delaney headbutted one police officer and attempted to strike another.

Delaney’s solicitor Calum Wood said Delaney’s behaviour was out of character, evidenced by his lack of criminal history.

Mr Wood said the 23-year-old has had an “unfortunate and prejudicial upbringing”, but nonetheless has had more or less consistent employment and has a certificate III in rural operations.

Magistrate Melanie Ho fined the man $2000, and did not record a conviction.
