A young Maranoa man has narrowly escaped being sent back to prison for shoplifting from a local business.

Kaidyn Scott Moore pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 24 to unauthorised dealing with shop goods.

Police prosecutor Ellysha Geddes said the 24-year-old entered Surat Post and News in Surat to pick up a parcel on Wednesday April 24, when he stole a pair of earrings and a pair of Bluetooth earphones from the business.

Moore was represented by duty lawyer Trevor May, who said Moore made full admissions to police, and also eventually paid the business for the stolen goods.

The court was told that at the time of his offending, Moore was on parole for other offences.

Magistrate Melanie Ho said Moore was lucky he had only been charged with a fine-only offence, because he was otherwise at risk of violating his parole.

Ms Ho fined the man the maximum available fine of $200, and recorded a conviction.
