Free oil collection service expanded

Murweh will join the Balonne and Western Downs councils in receiving a free oil collection service.

MURWEH shire is the latest beneficiary of a free oil collection service offered by waste management company JJ Richards and Sons.

The new location adds to the growing list of areas where the scheme is already offered, including the Balonne Shire and Western Downs.

Locals are expected to reap the benefits soon, according to Queensland Farmers' Federation president Stuart Armitage.

"The program has already collected over 30,000 litres of used oil from across the state,” he said.

"It assists farmers to manage a difficult waste stream generated from farming operations and reduce its on-farm hazard potential.

"Waste oils can pose environmental harm if not adequately stores or disposed of, and during natural disasters including flood and fire, can pose significant health and safety risks.”

Providing the opportunity to recycle used oil is also a step towards a cleaner environment, Mr Armitage said.

"The agricultural sector is moving towards adopting a circular economy,” he said.

"QFF has been working with farmers and rural communities to recognise the importance of farm sustainability and to grow and develop the resource recovery sector in Queensland.”
