Roma residents are rejoicing with supply restored after two separate gas leak incidents caused a major interruption to the town’s supply.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday evening and is believed to have been caused by damage to a gas main between Wyndham and Charles streets.
Part of the Warrego Highway was closed for a number of hours while emergency services worked to contain the leak.
On Thursday morning a second gas leak was discovered and another exclusion zone was put in place between Wyndham and Station streets for immediate repairs.
Emergency services and Maranoa Regional Council workers quickly resolved the issue and the exclusion zone was lifted and supply was restored around noon.
The unexpected loss of supply saw Maranoa Regional Council issue a notice to residents to cease any non-essential gas usage while repairs were underway.
While partial loss of has supply affected local residents and businesses, it’s understood no essential services were affected by the leak.
Maranoa Regional Council councillor John Birkett congratulated council crews for their efficient response to both situations.
“I spoke with an employee from a business that was directly affected by the incident, and they praised the efficiency of council and how quickly they secured the area,” he said.
“The avoidable accident caused during excavations reinforces the importance of thorough
checks whenever you dig.
“Before you break ground to undertake any form of earthworks, even as minor as fencing
or landscaping, you need to consult Before you Dig Australia via council’s website.
“As these incidents show, not doing so can result in damages that cause loss of services
to entire neighbourhoods, as well as significant cost to the person responsible.”
