Crews see more fires in winter

When the mercury falls, the number of house fires always rises, but avoiding disaster is simple, says Roma's top firie.

PLUMMETING temperatures across the west have marked the start of house fire season: something fire fighters such as Roma's Area Commander Peter McCarron are all too familiar with.

So far, the region has seen one tragedy, and Mr McCarron is expecting even more as the bitter cold of winter sets in.

"I am surprised we haven't had more already this winter, because it has been cold enough,” Mr McCarron said.

"We attend a lot more house fires in winter, and you can always see that level increase quite substantially.

"Every year it is the same: electric blankets, candles, and fireplaces or heaters - it is always those types of things that start the fires.”

Each year, the firies spread the same message, urging residents to take simple precautions.

"The key really is basic safety: being aware of what you have in the house, and not putting things too close to the fire or the heater,” Mr McCarron said.

"Fires tend to start in the lounge room or in the kitchen, if you leave something on, keep an eye on it.

"Electric blankets do sometimes start fires, but that often comes down to maintenance; you need to get them checked.”
