ROMA Hospital has announced Watpac Construction as the successful tenderer for the new $90.4 million hospital.

Preparation work will begin as early as next week.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles said there had been considerable interest in the tender for the hospital construction.

"The new Roma hospital is one of the largest govern- ment investments in the southwest,” Dr Miles said.

"And more than 340 direct and indirect jobs will be created throughout construction process.

"Parts of the current hospital are more than 70 years old and the Palaszczuk Government is committed to ensuring Queensland hospitals keep up with the growing and expanding needs of the community.”

The new hospital is to be fitted with a state-of-the-art emergency department and medical imaging depart- ment, as well as palliative care, maternity and mental health services.

Free parking for more than 220 vehicles will also be accommodated with two new car parks in the project.

Watpac is no stranger to hospital construction, having built the Gold Coast Private Hospital, the Mater Private Hospital Springfield and Ingham Hospital, as well as the QEII Jubilee Hospital elective surgery expansion.

"Watpac will also looking to involve local sub-contract- ors as much as possible,'' Dr Miles said.

"They're a Queensland success story having started in Brisbane in 1983.”

Watpac will be on site from Monday, with site works expected to start by late September.
