Roma, Mitchell shows cancelled for the first time in decades

Show societies in the Maranoa have called off their events for the first time sicne World War II, with COVID-19 posing too big a risk for all involved.

THE Roma Show Society hasn't cancelled their blockbuster event since World War II. That is, until now.

With the risk of coronavirus too big to ignore in a global pandemic, shows around the region have been called off.

Show societies in Roma and Mitchell made the difficult call overnight, but emphasised their number one priority is locals' health.

In a statement, the Roma Show Society said the whole team behind the show was disappointed, but the decision was for the best.

"Due to increased public health concern, to protect the health of locals, stakeholders and visitors alike … we wish to inform that the 2020 Roma Show has been cancelled," the statement read.

"It is extremely disappointing to cancel the Roma Show for 2020 and there are many people who will be impacted by this decision.

"The safety and wellbeing of our patrons, visitors and exhibitors is paramount, and in response to direction by the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies, Queensland Health, and the Australian Government, the Roma Show Society committee has decided this is the best course of action.

"We, the Roma Show Society committee, along with the Roma and wider Maranoa communities, look forward to your support and patronage at future Roma Shows."

The Roma Show was initially due to run from May 7-9.

Instead, the Show Society is looking to plan a recovery show to bolster community spirits once gathering restrictions are lifted, and will meet on Monday, March 20 to discuss options.

The committee called for locals to get involved in a statement released this morning.

"Planning an event such as the Roma Show takes time and effort! If you have any ideas, concerns or would love to be a part of the future of the Roma Show please come along to our next meeting," the statement read.

In the same vein, the Mitchell Show Society cancelled their event, originally scheduled for May 11-12, and issued a brief statement on behalf of the committee.

"We care about our community too much to expose you to the risk. We look forward to 2021," the statement read.

The Wallumbilla Show, scheduled to run from May 1-2 is not yet officially cancelled, with the show's committee set to meet and discuss their options next week.
