Role model and dancer named young citizen of the year

Hannah Hughes is an exceptional student, talented dancer, mentor, and now, Roma’s young citizen of the year.

AT JUST 17, Hannah Hughes is a high achieving student and an inspiring dancer teacher, as well as a successful highland dancer in her own right.

Her strong work ethic, and her desire to be a role model for other young people has earned her the title of Roma’s young citizen of the year.

Miss Hughes said she credits the influence of her mum, who has inspired here to dance at a high level, and teach others.

“I have been teaching a lot of dancing and I love doing that – I love teaching kids and getting to know them,” she said.

“With mum being a highland dance teacher, she has taught me everything I know, and I look up to her so much because she has given me some amazing opportunities.”

Off the stage, Miss Hughes has excelled in her Year 12 studies, and before her graduation at the end of 2019, earned a host of awards for academic achievement.

In all facets of her life, she makes a conscious effort to be someone that younger children in the Roma community can look up to – as a teacher, a dancer, and simply as a person.

“I think some of the younger girls at dancing look up to me do see me as a role model, and I think that is really special,” Miss Hughes said.

This year, Miss Hughes is off to university to study exercise physiology, but hopes to return to her beloved home town in between semesters.
