ROMA residents have gathered today to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the World War One Armistice, remembering those that fell in war and celebrating those who returned.

Roma and District Family History Society got the proceedings under way, hosting a short Remembrance Day service at the Roma General Cemetery at 7am.

During the service, Roma Scouts assisted with raising the flag and members of the Roma History Lodge laid wreaths on the Cenotaph.

Roma and District Family History Society Vice President Beryl Giles said today is 100 years since World War One ended, and they held the service because there are many soldiers buried in Roma.

"We have a lot of head stones remembering the soldiers who fought in the war and the History Society tries to do as much as we can for the soldiers by keeping their history alive,” she said.

"It has been a beautiful morning and it was lovely for everyone involved.”

RSL Roma Sub-Branch later held the Armistice centenary commemoration at the Roma Cenotaph, followed by the unveiling of a restored World War One War trophy German mortar at the RSL Hall.

RSL Roma Sub-Branch President George Mehay said Remembrance Day is a solemn day, where people need to pause and remember everyone who has served, not only in the First World War but all the conflicts before and since.

"We used our grant to restore a World War One War trophy German mortar, which is unique to the Roma soldiers because it was part of the Regiment from this district,” he said.

"It is not something to glorify war but to make sure people remember that during war, people die and they should never be forgotten.

"It has been a great turnout.”
