Hospital crane to be named by region's youngest

Opportunity for school students to name the hospital crane lighting up town's sky line

ST JOHN's students have weighed in on the town's newest competition: To name the hospital crane.

The 33-metre high, 60m long machine, capable of lifting loads up to seven tonnes, has popped up on Roma's skyline, much to the excitement of the region's youngest residents, and the new competition gives them a chance to find it a name.

South West Hospital and Health Service, along with Watpac, have put out the call to primary students to enter the competition, with the chosen name to be displayed at the hospital construction site, and the winner being awarded a new iPad.

Entry is free, and the winner, teacher, principal and four guests will be invited to the naming ceremony.

SWHHS chief executive Linda Patat said it was a chance for children to let their creativity shine.

"This is a terrific opportunity for kids in the south west to put their stamp on this historic project,” Ms Patat said.

"We are excited to be providing this opportunity to a local child, and it will be fantastic to see what ideas they come up with.”

Students in the three prep classes at St John's School were abuzz with ideas, some wanted to name it after themselves, while others thought outside the box.

The new three-level Roma Hospital building is being built specifically to meet the needs of the region, set to provide 22 beds and two birth suites, as well as more room for emergency, allied health, medical imaging, inpatient wards, and pathology departments.

It will also boast new operating theatres, a mortuary, reception, administration areas, staff lounge, training rooms, laundry, kitchen, a cafe and plant rooms, as well as 220 free parking spaces.
