Former nurses of Hospital Auxiliary back our newest recruits
The Roma Hospital Auxiliary is always working for local nurses and patients; this week they welcomed the newest batch of graduates to their community.

ALMOST all of the Roma Hospital Auxiliary are former country nurses; and while they may have left the wards behind, they are united by a passion to support the next generation.
This week, the Hospital Auxiliary volunteers welcomed the southwest’s newest group of graduate nurses to the community, lending their encouragement and support to those following in their footsteps.
Auxiliary member Liz Frith told The Western Star it is always a delight to meet the new talent as they arrive.
“We always host a function to congratulate and wish the new grads well in the places they are going, and it is also a time to let them know that there is plenty of support for them – we don’t ever want them to feel isolated in their new postings,” she said.
“Most of us in the hospital auxiliary are ex nurses or have been involved in the health department, and some are ladies from the district who have gotten involved because this is something they feel passionately about.
“We all think it is such a good thing to get the young ones back, because they keep our districts going.”
As well as supporting the nurses of the Maranoa, the auxiliary works quietly behind the scenes to make life at the hospital a little easier for patients and staff.
On top of providing pyjamas and toiletries for those who are admitted with nothing more than the clothes on their back, the group raises funds to buy equipment which will make patients more comfortable.
“We are raising funds to equip the palliative care unit just a little bit more for the patients’ and families’ comfort,” Ms Frith said.
“Now it has a fantastic new bed, and shower equipment which has been a godsend.
“We’re also looking at doing some things in the children’s ward to make it a better experience for them.”
