Anzac Day events in the Maranoa region 2024

A Roma resident and veteran shares why Anzac Day is important to him. Find out how you can show your support this year.

Australia and NZ have ‘an extraordinary history’ in defence and security: Anthony Albanese

Every year, Australians gather to remember the sacrifices that our defence force members have made, and continue to make, on Anzac Day.

In the Maranoa region, there are a myriad events to attend, to respectfully remember those who have served our country.

Deputy president of the Roma RSL sub-branch Ian Preisig said Anzac Day was important in remembering fallen soldiers, and enjoying the camaraderie and mateship of military service.

After 24 years of service in the Australian army, and five years of service on the New Zealand army, Mr Preisig said he was proud to have fought for his country, and to be part of a family tradition of military service.

Mr Preisig said his father served in the Defence Force before him, and both his sons have served in the army.

“You’ve signed on with the knowledge that at some point you might be called on to give your life to the army,” Mr Preisig said.

Mr Preisig said RSLs and events like Anzac Day were an important part of maintaining memories and traditions of those who fought for their country.

“Without the RSLs and legacy organisations, the generations that have grown up without conflict will forget the camaraderie,” he said.

“For me is not really a celebration, it’s a recognition of sacrifices people have made in times of conflict.”

On April 25, there will be many events across the Maranoa, for residents to show their support.
