AFTER a spate of wildfires throughout November and December, parts of Carnarvon National Park have been reopened.

The visitor area and main gorge track have been made accessible by park rangers, and the Moss Garden, Art Gallery, and Wards Canyon all have the green light to visit.

However, many sites are still off limits.

The Nature Trail, Boolimba Bluff, amphitheatre and the main track beyond the Art Gallery, including Cathedral Cave and Big Bend are all still closed, along with Baloon Cave and Rock Pool.

Rangers have partially reopened the Mickey Creek track, but the access to Warrumbah Gorge has not yet been deemed safe.

The closure of parts of Carnarvon are not isolated incidents said a Department of Environment and Science spokesperson.

"Queensland has experienced significant environmental damage following unprecedented bushfires, and some 40 national parks are closed or partially closed,” the spokesperson said.

"Rehabilitation and restoration is a long-term process that focuses on repairing infrastructure and natural resource damages.

"Where possible, it is best to allow vegetation to regenerate naturally, and in a lot of cases, vegetation can recover over time.”
