Roma State College year 8 students win Wonder of Science competition.

FIVE eager science students from Roma State College hit the road last week, journeying to Brisbane with their teacher and families for the Wonder of Science competition.

Year 8 students Matt Bradford, Edward Schefe, Tamarlia Storch, Annabel Flower and Jessica Rowling represented their school in the geology category of the state conference.

The group spent a day at the University of Queensland to present their science project to a panel of judges and an audience, telling them how they would turn their school oval in to a farming production.

Speaking in front of a large crowd would be daunting to most adults, but Tamarlia said it wasn't scary at all.

"Funnily enough, none of us were really nervous.

"The first time when we presented in front of the Grade 8s we were all freaking out, but then in front of 200 people we didn't bat an eyelid.”

Ultimately, the kids came away winners, topping the table against seven other school finalists.

As well as presenting, the group had the chance to tour the labs of a university campus larger than their home town, said Miss Flower.

"It was great meeting the scientists, we learned about what different scientists do, and some of them we didn't even know existed.”
