Supermum finds there is no time for retirement

A recent question from my 12-year-old had me thinking about retirement, when he suggested my Superman and I must be getting close to retirement age.

Supermum:

I haven't thought too much about retirement.

I've always been the type of person who worked, from age 16.

If I didn't have a job it was because I had two jobs... or three, not to mention doing studies on the side.

A recent question from my 12-yearo-old had me thinking about it, though, when he suggested my Superman and I must be getting close to retirement age.

We were sitting at the beach enjoying some sunshine, and I nearly choked on my chips.

I managed to explain at the age of 43 I was not yet ready to move into a retirement home and I had plenty of years in my yet to invest in my career.

I also explained I needed time to earn the money to cover his education, fashion and hair stying expenses, let alone his ever-increasing food bills.

I was thinking about retirement again this week when I ventured out to a Seniors Week Expo which, as well as providing a social event and yummy morning tea for attendees, it offered a wealth of information as to what was available out there for seniors to do.

According to a few ladies enjoying a morning out, they said their senior social calendars were full.

I thought I was busy juggling work and looking after my family.

But these seniors are busier.

Cards, lectures, bingo and morning teas were just the start of their social calendars, with days spent volunteering and listening to guest speakers at various functions.

They admitting to having one day at home, so they could catch up on the housework.

My Superman and I have been talking about our long term plans of late.

After all, we are waltzing down the aisle in just over a month's time.

Among our plans, we are working towards setting ourselves up for retirement financially, doing suggested things like reducing debt and planning for the future financially.

We have also been discussing all the things we would love to do together when we are old and grey - well, older and greyer.

Looking at actually retiring is the last thing on our minds.

I don't think I am ready to be that busy.
