Even at age 66, Neil Myler didn’t need much convincing to take the field in the Capras’ jersey he wore so proudly nearly 40 years ago.

He will be the oldest player taking part in the Capras and Comets Legends rugby league clash at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park at 6pm on Saturday.

A barnstorming front rower, he played in 1985 and 1986 for the Central Queensland Capras in the Queensland Winfield State League competition before the club joined the Q-Cup in 1996 as the Central Capras.

In 2000, the name was changed to the Central Comets before in 2011 becoming the Central Queensland Capras.

Myler said he was keen to see if he could still handle the contact side of the game.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

“I’m no kid, I’m 66, so obviously I won’t be playing the full game.

“I’m hoping I can go hard for five to 10 minutes here and there, take the footy up and make a few tackles.

“I haven’t played footy in donkey’s years... but I want to see if I can still do it.”

Capras’ stalwart Greg Reynolds, who coached Myler in 1986, has been a driving force behind bringing the Legends game to life.

He said the concept was inspired by the CQ Capras All Stars and Australian Legends of League game played in Rockhampton last November.

Reynolds said he was sure the game would be played in good spirits as past players got to relive their glory days.

Joining Myler in the Capras outfit will be the four Rothery brothers - Dean, Alan, Wade and Clint - while siblings Brent and Dallas Williams will take their place with the Comets.

Reynolds said the teams also included players such as Steven Bell and Tom Hewitt, who went on to play in the NRL.

There will be a full program of entertainment leading into the Legends game, including an All Stars touch football match, a Capras young guns trial, beat the bomb and dash for cash.

Gates open at 11.30am, with one lucky spectator getting a chance to win a $75,000 Ford Ranger or the equivalent in cash.
