Rockhampton Grammar School signalled their arrival on the Dolphins Cup scene with a commanding win over The Cathedral College.

Second rower Cooper Broadhurst scored a first-half double to set up the 20-6 victory, but it was a win set up by the crafty left-boot of halfback Callum Denman.

The impressive halfback set up all three of Rockhampton Grammar’s three tries with his boot, finding Broadhurst twice in the opening half.

Coach Nathan Doyle said it was a “very impressive first-up performance”.

He praised the performance of prop Henry Kallquist, who played 55 minutes as a starting front rower.

He and lock Xavier Nott were unstoppable through the middle, their bullocking runs getting Grammar some great go-forward.

Grammar showed their intent from the opening whistle and, with halfback Callum Denman pulling the strings, had TCC feeling the pressure early.

Broadhurst was making his presence felt in both defence and attack, his two tries giving Grammar a 12-nil lead at the break.

TCC looked a different side to the one that put 40 unanswered points on defending champions Emmaus a week earlier, with unforced errors proving costly.

Grammar extended their lead early in the second stanza when Mason Broadhurst scored a well-deserved try.

TCC five-eighth Jake Coomber crossed just minutes later to make it 16-6, sparking hope of a comeback, but a determined Grammar denied them any further scoring opportunities.

Second rower Tumanako Hatley sealed the memorable victory, darting in out wide to put the game beyond reach.

Grammar was also victorious in the Dolphins Challenge, scoring a come-from-behind win over TCC.

Trailing by six, Grammar took charge in the second half, dominating possession and field position.

They levelled the scores 13 minutes into the second half and fullback Cormack Werner produced a piece of individual brilliance, cutting through on the left edge to score the match winner.

PREVIEW

Workhorse Henry Kallquist will look to continue his impressive form when he lines up for Rockhampton Grammar in their first Dolphins Cup game of 2024 on Tuesday.

The rangy front rower starred for the CQ Capras under-17s, with his performance duly earning him a call-up to the club’s under-19s for the back end of the Mal Meninga Cup season.

He and his Grammar teammates will need to be at their best when they take on The Cathedral College in Round 2 of the open schoolboys rugby league competition as part of a Challenge/Cup double header.

Grammar’s Cup coach Nathan Doyle said the team was focused on being really competitive and playing to their potential after a winless 2023 campaign.

“The change I’ve seen this year is the players driving the standard at training instead of myself,” he said.

“We’ve got about eight boys returning from last year, which is good because they know what to expect at this level, what’s needed.

“We also have a number of boys who have played with the Capras and they’ve brought that professional approach back to us.”

Those Capras reps include Kallquist and back rower Cooper Broadhurst, who will be major influences in the playing group.

Callum Denman, who has come from Blackwater State High School, will also be instrumental in directing the team around the park at halfback.

Doyle said it would be a big test first up for his troops against TCC, who put 40 unanswered points on defending champs Emmaus in the competition opener last week.

“They’re very strong. We’re going to have to be at 100 percent and play to our full ability to be close to them,” he said.

“They’re big and powerful through the middle so if we control their middle, hopefully we can score some points on an edge.

“Our preparation has been all about each player doing his job so we’ll see how we go.”
