They’ve been putting in the grind in the pre-season. Now the Capras four underage teams get to channel their hard work into game play in their first trials of the season.
The under-17 and under-19 girls and boys will come up against the Mackay Cutters at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park on Saturday.
While under-17 girls coach Nikki Carpenter has already decided on the make-up of her squad for 2025, the three other coaches will be watching intently before they make the call on theirs.
The under-17 girls play at 11.30am, the under-19 girls at 12.45pm, the under-17 boys at 2pm and the under-19 boys at 3.15pm.
Under-17 boys coach Todd Hansen has named 23 players for Saturday’s clash, and will take a similar number into the second trial the following weekend.
“Everyone will get a trial who has been with us (during pre-season),” he said.
“All these young fellas deserve an opportunity.”
Under-19 boys coach Pete Rogers is of the same mind.
He has 46 players in his squad, 31 of whom will get their chance to impress on Saturday.
Their game will be played over six 15-minute quarters to give everyone a decent amount of minutes.
“One game just wasn’t long enough and the Mackay Cutters are in a similar boat,” Rogers said.
“This is the reward for all the work they’ve done in the pre-season.
“We have plenty of talent and skill, but one of the big things we’ve been trying to emphasise is effort areas.
“The players ready and willing to do that are the ones who will earn their place in the final squad.”
For Carpenter and under-19 girls coach Cedric Auda, it’s all about fine-tuning combinations and getting the on-field processes right.
“It’s been a long pre-season and the girls have certainly put in the hard work,” Auda said.
“They’re looking forward to it and are super-keen to hit the paddock.”
