HOCKEY: Aaron Harmsworth has coached the Capricornia open schoolboys to four state titles in his time at the helm.

He believes he has a good chance of making it five at this year’s championships, which start in Rockhampton on Sunday.

Ten teams – Capricornia, Peninsula, Northern, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan East, Metropolitan North, Darling Downs and South Coast – will contest the four-day event at Kalka Shades.

Pool games will be played on Sunday and Monday, cross-over games on Tuesday and finals on Wednesday.

Capricornia are in a pool with Darling Downs, Wide Bay, Peninsula and Sunshine Coast.

Harmsworth said he had a strong, well-balanced outfit that had the talent and skill to challenge any at the championships.

“I think this team has the potential and I would be disappointed if we didn’t make the top four but at tournaments like these you need a bit of luck with injuries and player fatigue becoming factors as we play potentially seven games in four days,” he said.

“If we are there at the end of the tournament and fighting fit, I give us a chance.”

Harmsworth said last year’s grand finalists Wide Bay and Met East looked good on paper again and would likely be the teams to beat.

He said the championships would deliver top-quality hockey, with some of the state’s best young talent on show.

Capricornia open their campaign against Darling Downs at 11.50am today (Sunday) before taking on Wide Bay at 3.10pm.

On Monday, they play Peninsula at 10.50am and Sunshine Coast at 3.50pm.
