The state government has purchased a property in Rockhampton’s inner city and revealed plans to build 12 public housing units.

It comes as most of Queensland continues to experience incredibly tight rental markets with Rockhampton recording a vacancy rate of 0.9 to 1 per cent in June.

The Department of Housing purchased neighbouring properties over 11 George St and 98 Campbell Ln in March for $420,000, set over four titles.

The George St property has a home on the site which will be demolished to make way for the development.

The other properties previously had properties that have since been cleared.

A spokesperson for the Department of Housing has now confirmed to the Morning Bulletin the project is in the design phase and will provide 12 social housing units, with a mix of one and two-bedroom accommodation.

“We’re building more social housing, we’re buying existing properties where that’s the best option in the local area, and we’re helping people to secure and sustain private rentals, including leasing homes,” the statement read.

“Not only are we helping now, we’re planning for the future, with more homes planned across Queensland, and a strong focus on regions where the need is greatest.”
