A Rockhampton bar attendant, fearing for her safety, locked herself inside a pub after a drunk patron threatened to bash her and was kicked out of the venue, a court has heard.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard William Thompson De Thierry, 50, was drinking at The Oxford Hotel on East St, Rockhampton, at 9.59pm on April 23 when he started a verbal altercation with another patron, calling him a “racist c**t”.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe said the bar attendant intervened and cut service from De Thierry, telling him to leave the pub.

Senior Constable Rowe said De Thierry begun harassing the bar attendant, getting in her face and threatening to bash her.

She said the attendant pushed De Thierry outside the venue and locked herself inside out of concern for her safety.

She said De Thierry started to bang on the window at the front door of the venue, attempting to get the attention of the attendant, and punched it, causing it to shatter.

She said De Thierry was found shortly after on Denham St, Rockhampton, with injuries to his arms and hands and that he was too intoxicated to be interviewed by police.

The court heard De Thierry had no criminal history.

De Thierry, who appeared in court over the phone from Coominya in the Somerset Region, described his offending as “stupidity”.

“It was just a stupid act at the time,” he said.

“I’m not much of a drinker.

“We were just celebrating one of the boy’s birthdays.”

Magistrate Athol Kennedy told De Thierry, who the court heard was born in New Zealand and worked as a power poll inspector, that next time he celebrated someone’s birthday “don’t drink at all”.

De Thierry pleaded guilty to one count each of committing public nuisance within a licensed premises and wilful damage.

He was fined $500.

No criminal conviction was recorded.
