Drug Operation Rockhampton

A drug addict busted with 22.75g of pure methamphetamines had shortened firearms hidden in a secret compartment under carpet in the staircase of his home.

Police found a total of 31.53g meth, $27,930.20 cash, two shortened firearms, two mobile phones, 0.408g of MDMA and 0.083g of cocaine, along with clip-seal bags, a cryovac machine, a laminator, pipes, straws, scales, scoops and gloves.

Mark Stephen McIntosh, 29, pleaded guilty on December 8 in the Supreme Court in Rockhampton to one count of possessing a dangerous drug in excess of two grams and three of possessing dangerous drugs.

Justice Graeme Crow said McIntosh’s stash and behaviour was an example of someone in the grips of a meth addiction.

“Drugs and guns are a recipe for disaster,” he said.

“People on meth are out of their minds, off their heads.”

Police raided McIntosh’s Frenchville residence at 8.50am on November 6, 2020, where they found two shortened firearms, a silver barrel of a shotgun and five rounds of ammunition in hot-sealed cryovac bags in a hidden compartment under carpet in the internal staircase.

They also found $24,000 cash in a cryovac bag and a Samsung mobile phone in the hidden compartment.

Police locate a variety of drugs and weapons at Rockhampton home.

There was a cryovac bag containing 19.725g pure meth in 27.321g of substance in the hidden compartment and a further 2.87g of pure meth in 4.041g in a black box on the kitchen bench.

McIntosh also had $1930.20 in his wallet and $2,000 in an envelope.

Inside a Heinz baked beans tin in the cupboard, police found 0.408g of MDMA and 0.083g of cocaine.

There was a taser in a backpack on top of the fridge, and scales, glass pipe and unused clip-seal bags in a locked box.

Police also located a laminator, black latex gloves, cryovac machine, scoops, funnels and digital scales in the kitchen.

In McIntosh’s bedroom, police found glass pipes including one in a false clock behind the door, a glass bong and 1.27g pure meth in 1.71g substance.

In a hallway cupboard, police located 24 oxycodone tablets and 15 lyrica tablets.

During a pat down search of McIntosh, police found a mobile phone in his short pockets.

When police asked McIntosh to unlock the phone, he claimed he changed the password two days prior and couldn’t remember what it was.

He claimed he still carried it on him in the hopes he would remember the password.

A telecommunications report showed McIntosh had used the phone the morning of the raid to send an encrypted message on Wickr.

He claimed he found the guns in a bag while riding his motorbike at the back of Six Mile Road, Pink Lily, and thought it would be “cool” to take them home.

Defence barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said the former private school student had not “enjoyed a lavish lifestyle” from his offending.

He said McIntosh injured his foot in 2009 and underwent an ankle fusion surgery in 2015.

Mr Ahlstrand said he suffered ongoing pain and discomfort.

The court heard McIntosh turned to illicit drugs to self medicate, first with marijuana, leading to his addiction to meth where he was using 0.5g of meth a day at the time of his arrest.

He now has a three-month-old son with his partner.

McIntosh claimed he had been free of illicit drugs for “some time now”.

Justice Crow sentenced McIntosh to three years prison, declared four days presentence custody and set parole release for December 4, 2022.
