Man in 70s injured, 1km exclusion zone after truck rolls in Gracemere

Shocking images have emerged from the scene of a truck rollover after an alert for a potentially explosive leak and exclusion zone was eerily reminiscent of the recent Bruce Hwy disaster. VIDEO, PHOTOS.

A potential disaster has been averted in Central Queensland after a truck carrying ammonium nitrate rolled near Rockhampton on Saturday.

In scenes eerily reminiscent of the initial stages of the recent ammonium nitrate truck crash which led to an explosion and days-long shutdown of the Bruce Hwy at Bororen, a 1km exclusion zone was established after a prime mover rolled in Gracemere.

Emergency crews responded to the crash at the intersection of Boongary Rd and Gracemere Stanwell Industrial Precinct Rd just before 8am.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed the truck was carrying ammonium nitrate.

The spokeswoman said three crews responded and that there was a small spill of ammonium nitrate from the trailer.

She said there was a 1km exclusion zone around the truck, which had since been downgraded to 100m.

She said the ammonium nitrate leak was isolated at 8.50am, the truck was no longer leaking and crews had also isolated the batteries from the truck.

Boongary Rd was now open to traffic.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police had cleared the area.

The spokesman said a tow truck was on scene.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a man in his 70s, the driver of the truck, had self-extricated from the vehicle.

The spokeswoman said paramedics had assessed the man for head and chest injuries and he was transported to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition.
