The mother and accused murderer of an eight-year-old Rockhampton boy, who had been in foster care up until 12 months ago, allegedly wrote “protect Zion from Satan” on an artist canvas and claimed “a voice told her” to kill her son, according to court documents.
Louwanna Thyra Goltz, 36, has been charged with the murder of her young son Zion Ziggy Sean Goltz at their Waterloo Street, Berserker residence sometime on July 29.
Ms Goltz’s matter was mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court Monday morning where her lawyer, Pierre Lammersdorf, ordered a brief of evidence and she was remanded in custody.
Ms Goltz did not physically appear in the courtroom.
In an objection to bail affidavit by police, filed with the court and viewed by this publication, police requested Ms Goltz stay in custody due to fears for her safety due to her suicide ideation and information police allegedly received that some relatives may “take matters into their own hands should she be released from custody”.
The affidavit also stated it was alleged Ms Goltz turned up on the doorstep of family members in Parkhurst at 1am on July 30 allegedly “rambling incoherently about spirits and referencing a covered artist’s canvas” she had with her.
According to the court documents, one of the witnesses told police Ms Goltz told her she had been lying down with the victim child watching television and a voice told her to kill him ‘because Child Safety would take him away and she herself would end up in a body bag’.
Police attended the Waterloo Street unit Ms Goltz shared with her son to perform a welfare check about 2.20am Saturday and officers found the eight-year-old boy, now known to be Zion, unresponsive.
The property is owned by the Department of Housing.
The court documents state it appeared Zion had died by strangulation and an autopsy would provide further information.
Neighbours said they often saw Zion riding his scooter and it is understood he was a student at Berserker Street State School.
The affidavit showed the victim’s father had spoken with police and allegedly informed them the child had been returned to Ms Goltz’s care 12 months ago and Ms Goltz had allowed regular visits and contact which “abruptly ceased a month ago”.
Police alleged Ms Goltz’s mental health had “rapidly declined” in the past month “and alarmingly quickly within the last week”.
The court documents state family and witnesses told police they had allegedly heard Ms Goltz yelling incoherently over the past month, particularly when she had been under the influence.
The court documents also state neighbours have reported her speaking in an unknown language and screaming ‘f--- off“ over the previous two weeks.
Another witness allegedly told police he observed the relationship between the Ms Goltz and Zion to be usually quite loving, but in the past two weeks, Ms Goltz had told them Zion had been “doing her head in” and was stressing her out.
The court documents state on the night of the incident, that same witness alleged he assisted Ms Goltz in collecting some personal items and driving her to his house and he observed her to be marking an artist’s canvas that she refused to let him see.
The witness allegedly told police they had a conversation about the canvas and she started speaking about spirits.
Police allegedly seized the mentioned canvas and have observed words written all over it, having strong Christianity themes relating to Satan, spirits and Jesus.
There were allegedly multiple references to the victim including: “Miracle bring Zion back”, “May Lord Jesus forgive me for hurting Zion”, “Protect Zion from Satan”, “Satan leave Ziggy alone return to mother now” and “Satan return to hell leave Zion soul”.
The affidavit stated the victim allegedly had been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he struggled in his first year of life due to being born prematurely and had required the use of an oxygen tank in his first year.
Ms Goltz had been taken to the Mental Health Unit before her arrest due to the behaviour police allegedly witnessed which included her mentioning spirits and spirituality, reporting voices speaking to her regularly and her talking to these voices in police presence, apologising for disrespecting the voices with what she had done.
The accused also had significant bruising and scratch marks on her throat and possible ligature marks circling her neck.
Ms Goltz allegedly refused medication and health care provided at the hospital and while she was in the watchhouse.
Ms Goltz was remanded in custody and her matter adjourned until October 26.
Police prosecutor acting Sergeant Sarah Rowe said the lengthy adjournment was due to the wait period for the autopsy.
