A teenage girl kicked a nurse “several times” in a nasty incident in a public waiting area at a Toowoomba hospital.

Kelly Marie Elizabeth Clark-Brooks, 19, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on January 11 to common assault, wilful damage, public nuisance, and three counts of breaching bail.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said that at 6.45pm on March 7 last year, police were called to Toowoomba Base Hospital in relation to Clark-Brooks causing a disturbance.

Mr Boyd said when police arrived at the hospital, they heard Clark-Brooks screaming and yelling verbal abuse from a waiting room in the emergency department.

The prosecutor said Clark-Brooks was then “calmed”, placed in a wheelchair and taken outside.

Mr Boyd said hospital security staff told police the hospital was busy and Clark-Brooks was not happy with having to wait.

They told police Clark-Brooks had verbally abused hospital staff and when that was unsuccessful, she made threats of self-harm and wrapped a phone cord from a wall phone around her neck.

“In doing so (Clark-Brooks) has damaged the phone, ripping it from the wall,” Mr Boyd said.

Security officers and a nurse came to Clark-Brooks’ aid and removed the phone cable from her neck.

Mr Boyd said Clark-Brooks then kicked the nurse in the leg several times, causing him pain and discomfort.

The court heard the three bail breaches related to Clark-Brooks not reporting to police as required.

It was told Clark-Brooks had no criminal history.

Solicitor Lauren Townsend said Clark-Brooks suffered from numerous conditions including PTSD, depression, anxiety and a neurological disorder.

Ms Townsend said Clark-Brooks was pregnant, receiving a disability support pension, and she lived with her partner at Monto.

In relation to the hospital incident, Ms Townsend said Clark-Brooks instructed she had “a bit of a mental breakdown”.

“She thinks the phone got ripped off the wall when people were trying to get the (cord) off from around her neck, rather than her pulling it off the wall.”

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale placed Clark-Brooks on six months’ probation and no conviction was recorded.
