A former miner who was caught with more than 2g of pure methamphetamine at a Rockhampton motel was found with of a sawn-off rifle and ammunition two days earlier.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard that Jake Sandry, 40, was found in possession of the sawed-off rifle and box of ammunition on September 17, 2022.

Two days later Sandry was found in possession of 7.35g of substance containing 2.2g of pure methamphetamines at Centrepoint Motor Inn on George St in Rockhampton, the court was told this week.

He was sentenced in the Supreme Court in Rockhampton on February 13 to 345 days prison with 345 days declared as time served for possessing the meth.

Police prosecutor Corey O’Connor said on September 19 Sandry was also found with a “minuscule amount” of marijuana, one bong, three pipes, digital scales and clip seal bags, and just short of $7,000 cash.

Sandry’s solicitor, Grant Cagney, said his client was using meth at the time he committed the offences before the court.

Mr Cagney said the firearm was one his client had “for a fair while”.

“He used to shoot it on properties and was hoping to one day have his own property for that weapon,” he said.

“Shooting vermin and things like that, not target shooting.

“He had it in a storage shed with his old car for a significant period of time.

“It’s not an allegation it was used in public or taken in public.”

He said his client was granted bail in August last year and had committed no further offences.

Sandry pleaded guilty to one count each of unlawfully possessing a weapon, possessing ammunition, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing drug paraphernalia, possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of an offence under the drugs misuse act and possessing suspected tainted property.

He was sentenced to six months prison with immediate release on parole and 345 days of pre-sentence custody was declared as time already served.

Criminal convictions were recorded.
