Jake Sandry busted with meth at Rockhampton motel

A former miner and meatworker called police about a disturbance in the motel he was living in. But it was him that they became more interested in.

Jake Sandry, 40, called police to Centrepoint Motor Inn on George Street in Rockhampton about 1am on September 19, 2022, about a disturbance, the Supreme Court in Rockhampton heard on Monday, February 13.

Justice Graeme Crow said the drug user was wanted by Queensland Police Service for other matters and was detained and had his room key confiscated.

He said police searched his motel room about 4am and found 7.35g of substance containing 2.2g of pure methamphetamines in a black bag.

A former machine operator at the mines as well as a meatworker, Sandry had a four-page criminal record, including convictions in six drug incidents, violence and property offences.

He was last sentenced in Gladstone Magistrates Court for possessing drug utensils.

The court heard Sandry now lives in Ipswich with family after spending time incarcerated before his sentencing for this meth possession.

He spent 345 days in presentence custody, which Justice Crow said was double what he should have spent for that amount of meth.

Sandry pleaded guilty to one count of possessing more than 2g of a schedule one drug.

He was sentenced to 345 days prison with 345 days declared as time served.

He was released immediately on parole.
