An erratic and belligerent woman was busted by police using a busy, popular fast food restaurant’s toilet for an unusual daily routine act.
Jessica May Purcell had flooded the disability toilet at the McDonalds restaurant on the corner of George and Fitzroy Streets, Rockhampton, on December 19, the Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on February 8.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe said police were called to the international fast food chain about 5.40pm for a female causing a disturbance.
She said when they arrived, staff told them there was a woman in the disabled toilets, abusing patrons, using loud obscene language and preventing other customers from using the bathroom.
“Police observed the female to be … soaking wet and naked and had flooded the bathroom,” Senior Constable Rowe said.
“(She) appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was acting erratic and belligerent.
“The defendant stated she was bathing herself in the bathroom.”
She said there were multiple families in the restaurant.
Purcell also stole clothing from Menswear Direct in Rockhampton’s East St, two days in a row in mid January – one a high vis long sleeve shirt she wore when she returned the next day to steal a pink button-up long sleeve shirt.
Two days later, she walked into the Rockhampton CIB Police station on Bolsover St, wearing the stolen high vis shirt and the pink one was in her backpack.
Purcell told police she stole the shirts because she was homeless.
The defendant, who has a seven-page criminal record, was on a suspended sentence at the time.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale sentenced Purcell in October 2022 to 12 months’ prison, suspended for two years, with convictions recorded.
The court heard Purcell had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression and abused substances.
Purcell pleaded guilty to one count of public nuisance and two of stealing.
She was placed on a nine-month probation order and convictions were recorded.
