A murder trial where a Rockhampton meatworker is accused of killing his housemate is likely to take about a week, a court heard.

Police allege Hamid Hussein, 36, caused the injuries which Amanullah Mohammad, 32, later died of in Rockhampton Hospital on January 30, 2021.

Mr Hussein’s case was mentioned in Rockhampton Supreme Court on July 22 with an update in the case from his barrister, Andrew Hoare, who said the trial would mostly involve the evidence which would take three or four days, “perhaps even less”.

“There’s not a great deal of narrative evidence because there’s no real witnesses for the fatal assault,” he said.

The court had previously heard there had been “significant delays” in the committal process because of the need for translators.

In previous mentions the Magistrates Court heard a translator was needed to interpret a language spoken in 14 hours’ worth of body-worn camera footage.

It was also said there was only one person in Australia that could translate that language - Rohingya.

During the July 22 mention, Mr Hoare said defence did not oppose the use of a sole interperter during the trial, which has been tentatively set to start on October 21, given the lack of interperters for that language in Australia.

The court heard that interpreter would be booked now for the October trial.

Mr Hoare also advised a submission would be sent to the Department of Public Prosecutions yesterday regarding the case.

The case well be next mentioned on August 2 regarding the outcome of that submission.

No pleas have been entered.
