Violence against women in Australia ‘completely unacceptable’: Ruston

A Central Queensland woman required surgery after she was “viciously attacked” by her partner, who accused her of cheating.

Danial Kenneth Doyle, 42, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on October 8 to one count of grievous bodily harm.

Crown prosecutor Samantha O’Rourke said Doyle and the victim, who was his partner at the time, were at home together and had been drinking when he accused her of cheating.

Ms O’Rourke said when the victim didn’t respond to the allegations, Doyle punched her in the eye.

The victim fell to the ground and Doyle punched her again.

Ms O’Rourke said the victim couldn’t remember anything that happened after the second blow.

Police attended the residence the following day and the victim was taken to hospital, where she was referred to a specialist.

Ms O’Rourke said the victim had extensive injuries, including multiple facial fractures, and required surgery to avoid permanent injury to her health.

She said it was a “vicious attack” with physical harm suffered by the victim.

Barrister Sheridan Shaw said her client, who was a father to three children and had worked as an underground coal miner at various mines across Central Queensland, grew up in Emerald and was exposed to domestic violence at a young age.

Ms Shaw said her client started using methamphetamine at 27 years old and that his usage led to his “life degrading”.

“It’s a lifestyle he is trying to avoid upon release,” she said.

“He wants to be a better father for his children.”

Doyle was sentenced to prison for four years with 292 days declared as time served and a parole eligibility date set for December 20, 2021.
