A man due to marry his fiance overseas has faced court for harassing a group of women out on a hen’s night when he was so drunk he “doesn’t remember anything”.

Bradley James Dayes, 35, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on January 11 to one public nuisance charge and two counts of obstructing police.

Police prosecutor Mirren Smith said Dayes followed the group of women from where he was drinking at the Criterion Hotel on Quay Street into the Zambrero restaurant on the corner of East and Denham streets at 6.15pm on December 7, 2022.

“The defendant approached the women and stared at them, making them uncomfortable when they asked him to leave them alone,” Ms Smith said.

She said Dayes told the women he “was helping them” before they “felt so uncomfortable they left the restaurant in an attempt to escape the unwanted behaviour”.

“Once outside the women told him again to leave them alone, but again the defendant said he wanted to help them,” Ms Smith said.

The unwanted behaviour caused the women “to fear for their safety” before they returned to the restaurant to seek refuge.

When a restaurant staff member stepped in and asked Dayes to leave the women alone he responded with “F--- off, do you know who you are talking to? Back off and leave me alone”, before the police were called.

Dayes also struggled with police before and after he was taken to the watchhouse and “threw himself on the ground”, the court heard.

Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said Dayes had a fiance and was soon to be married overseas.

“He is very sorry for his actions and accepts that what has been said did occur,” Ms Legrady said.

Magistrate Grace Kahlert said Dayes was “grossly intoxicated” and him following a group of women “was concerning”.

“It seems you may have some issues with your level of drinking, and no doubt you’ll bear that in mind given you’re no longer a young man, you are 35 years old,” Ms Kahlert said.

Dayes has two entries on his criminal history from 2005 and 2010, which Ms Kahlert described as “dated” yet still “concerning”.

Ms Kahlert fined Dayes $800 and ordered no criminal conviction be recorded.
