A Rockhampton woman has avoided serving time in custody after she used a stolen debit card to fraudulently purchase more than $100 worth of cigarettes, crumbed sausages and other items.
Anita Smith, 32, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on February 14 to four counts of fraud and one count each of attempted fraud and receiving tainted property.
Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said the victim was an 18-year-old Rockhampton woman who had her handbag snatched, which contained her wallet.
Ms Leach said Smith received the victim’s Suncorp Debit Card and used it to make a number of fraudulent transactions at Foodworks on George Street, Rockhampton, on October 30, 2021.
Smith used the stolen card to purchase two packets of cigarettes worth $55, a lighter and packet of cigarettes worth $58.20, Telstra prepaid phone credit worth $50, and two crumbed sausages, packet of cigarettes and an Ice Break drink worth $35.60.
Smith attempted to purchase a further packet of cigarettes worth $50 from the same store, however, the transaction declined as the victim had managed to cancel the card.
Ms Leach said Smith had a 10 page criminal history and was on a suspended sentence at the time of committing the offences.
Smith was sentenced to six months’ prison, suspended for 12 months. Her previous suspended sentence was extended for three months.
