A woman who allegedly assaulted the owner of a hostel in Brisbane while on parole has applied for bail in a Rockhampton court.
Andrina Romona Barry, 37, appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 6 charged with one count of assaults occasioning bodily harm.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe said the owner of the hostel at 17 Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill, was walking towards his vehicle when he was confronted by Ms Barry who allegedly grabbed his genitalia.
Senior Constable Rowe said Ms Barry was told to go and that she responded by allegedly punching the man to the left side of the head.
The man fell and landed in the gutter nearby and when he stood up he found his spectacles to be smashed.
He locked his vehicle and ran to an address where he contacted Triple-0 and was transported to hospital.
Senior Constable Rowe said over the next few days the man allegedly had vomiting, headaches, and blurry vision and that his alleged injuries were a bruised lung, damage to his upper tooth, which required a dental implant, and a concussion.
She said Ms Barry was on parole at the time of the alleged assault charge and that she was also subjected to a suspended sentence.
“I do believe she is at risk of committing further offences,” she said.
Solicitor Brendan Gimbert said the hostel was a halfway house following his client’s release from prison and that she instructed there was no support for her at the time.
“She wasn’t shown the basic facilities of the hostel,” Mr Gimbert said.
He said shortly after arriving at the hostel she was the victim of an alleged assault.
“She’s then seen the owner of the hostel in the car park and confronted him, venting those issues to him and not really getting any positive responses,” he said.
“Her emotions got the better of her.”
He argued his client wouldn’t serve a lot of time in custody for the alleged offence.
He said he would be requesting CCTV footage and that the matter would move forward through case conferencing.
“It will ultimately be a plea once the factual basis is confirmed,” he said.
He said his client did have issues with drugs and had been discussing a placement at the GumBi GumBi rehabilitation centre in Rockhampton, however, there was a long wait list.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale refused to grant Ms Barry bail, stating she was not at risk of spending too much time in custody.
Ms Barry was remanded in custody and her matter was adjourned to April 27.
