A Central Queensland mum has been sentenced after she violently assaulted another woman at a Coles supermarket.

Cody Louise Keating, 28, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage.

The court heard that about 4.20pm on April 21 last year, Keating was at Coles, Tannum Sands, when she approached a woman she knew and started punching her multiple times in the head and upper body.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jessica McLaren said among the victim’s injuries was swelling to her left eye and cheek, as well as bruising and marks to an arm, and head and back pain.

“A witness intervened and stopped (Keating) from punching the victim,” Snr Const McLaren said.

“(Keating) left the store on foot.”

The prosecutor said staff and members of the public assisted the victim while police were called.

In relation to the wilful damage offence, the court heard that happened a week prior and the victim was a different woman who owned a Suzuki Swift.

Keating also knew this woman, the court heard.

Snr Const McLaren said just after midnight on April 14, Keating walked across Goondoon Street near Mieplace Niteclub and climbed onto the parked Suzuki Swift, jumping on the windscreen “multiple times”.

She then ran from the scene, the prosecutor said.

The prosecution sought restitution for the damaged windscreen.

The court heard Keating, originally from Victoria, had no Queensland criminal history.

Solicitor Cassandra Ditchfield said Keating was a mother-of-two who suffered from PTSD and she was prescribed medicinal cannabis.

In relation to the supermarket assault, Ms Ditchfield explained the background, saying Keating had been bullied online by the victim.

“This was the first occasion that she had seen (the victim) following the online bullying - essentially that was surrounding (the victim) questioning (Keating’s) parenting ability,” Ms Ditchfield said.

The solicitor said Keating accepted her behaviour was “certainly not appropriate.”

In relation to the car incident, Ms Ditchfield said Keating had “consumed far more alcohol than she ever normally would.”

“She can’t explain the behaviour and she isn’t attempting to justify it in any way,” Ms Ditchfield said.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan placed Keating on 15 months’ probation with conditions, and ordered she pay $300 restitution.

No convictions were recorded.
