A baker who once supplemented his income working for a car rental company has more recently been busted supplying drugs.
Adam Jeffrey Hassam, 45, was sentenced in Rockhampton District Court for 13 drug supply charges after pleading guilty to the offences and three other related charges on February 28.
Judge Jeff Clarke said seven of the supplies were for methamphetamines and six were for marijuana – all small amounts.
He said Hassam was on probation at the time of the drug supply offences.
Hassam was also busted possessing a small amount of marijuana and oxycodone, along with a water pipe and grinder.
Judge Clarke said Hassam had used drugs – meth and marijuana – for years prior to the crash.
Defence barrister Maree Willey said her client was selling drugs to support his own habit and he used drugs to numb physical and emotional pain.
The court heard Hassam had been in a car accident in 2015 and suffered serious spinal issues since.
He has also received a disability pension since 2016.
Ms Willey provided the court with three drug tests showing the father-of-two only had medicinal marijuana in his system, for which he now has a prescription.
She also provided the court with documents showing Hassam’s rehabilitation efforts including seeking mental health help along with attending Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services.
Judge Clarke said Hassam had also been employed by a man “who has significant standing in the local community” – Wayne Clifford who, according to LinkedIn, is a managing partner at Rockhampton Wholesale Bakehouse, Jolt Bakery Cafe and Degani Bakery Cafe.
He said Hassam had started working as a baker after leaving school in Year 11, and supplemented his income working for a car rental company.
Hassam pleaded guilty to 13 counts of supplying a dangerous drug and one count each of possessing a dangerous drug, possessing a thing used in supplying drugs and possessing drug utensils.
He was sentenced to 18 months prison with immediate parole release.
