A ‘no shirt, no service’ sign at a tight-knit Qld town bakery was just the first of several culture shocks for one true blue Aussie who prides himself on being a pie connoisseur. WATCH

PieGUY, Nathan Groves, visits towns to taste test pies, what a job!

The content creator has more than 5000 followers on TikTok and recently travelled around Central Queensland to review pies in Gladstone, Yeppoon, Biloela and Rockhampton.

But it was a sign out the front of the Mount Morgan Hot Bread Store that sparked his interest.

“The people of Mount Morgan are fed up, mate,” he said.
“They’re not gonna serve anyone if you don’t have a shirt on.

“There’s a sign that says if you don’t have a shirt on, we will not serve you.

“I think that says everything you need to know about Mount Morgan.”

The Central Queensland town is located roughly 40 minutes from Rockhampton, and is noteworthy in Australian history for its large gold mine – one of the richest in the country at its peak.

In his video PieGUY claims many people seem to stay in the town “forever”.

“Just because there’s history here, it doesn’t mean you have to live in the past,” he said.

“You can move towns, you don’t have to stay here forever – but that seems to be what everyone does here.”

There is no doubt that Mount Morgan is adored by its loyal residents, and many tourists, regardless of any perceptions the outside world may harbour toward it.

But there was good news for the locals, it wasn’t’ all mocking with PieGUY giving a good review for the potato-topped curry pie.

“Honestly, it is pretty good – I am digging it,” he said.

“I think I’m gonna go with [a score of] 7.1.”

The PieGUY’s bio states “I eat pies, rate them 1-10. Let’s find the best.”

While the Mount Morgan Hot Bread Store declined to comment locals have had a lot to say following the post.

One viewer claimed she used to work at the store and said when she was working there the best pie was miner’s pie or cornmeat pie.

Another claimed the shirt sign policy was 110% because of them: “Just ask the owner” they laughed.

“Come Back! We’re really cool! Honestly” begged another.

“I did move towns a few times, but then I moved back. I absolutely love it here.”

“My parents used to live in Mt Morgan 50 years ago and dad always said they had the best lies (sic) there. Don’t know about now.”

The PieGUY also recently visited Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Biloela to assess the quality of their savoury baked goods.

Since its mining heyday Mount Morgan has struggled with disproportionately high unemployment rates – as recently as five years ago, one fifth of the town’s residents were unemployed.
The unemployment rate has since fallen, but many of the stereotypes painting the town as run-down have remained.
