Milman State School only has four students, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a big impact for locals in Livingstone Shire.

The students have created a community pantry to give back to local residents.

The initiative commenced on September 3 with Bunnings Yeppoon donating all the necessary materials to create the pantry and Emu Park Men’s Shed assisting with the construction as well as receiving additional support from the school’s P&C group.

All of the produce they supply is grown by students or donated by local farmers.
Milman State School teacher Tina Job said the program started to provide support for their local community.

“[The veggie garden] started as a student council project... Ange from Bunnings Yeppoon came in and she planted and donated everything so that the students were ready to go,” she said.

“We had another student council meeting about what to do with the produce and we decided to pay it forward and give back to the community... we did a bit of research and saw what the options were, and that’s when we decided on a community pantry.

“As a small community, the feedback we’ve been receiving has been favourable.”

Bunnings Yeppoon activities organiser Ange Beveridge said Bunnings has backed the community pantry from the beginning.

“We have been there from the beginning ... [Bunnings] has sourced and funded the whole lot,” Ms Beveridge said.

“It’s been there about a month, and they’re always turning over fruit and veggies.”

Emu Park Men’s Shed volunteer Keith Pattern said he is very supportive of the community pantry project.

“I’m 100 per cent behind it,” he said.

“They’re providing support for people who need it.

“I did the plans for it, then three of us got stuck in and built it over a couple of weeks.”

The project is showing no signs of slowing down and is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
