Homes needed for dogs as Yeppoon’s pound nears capacity

They are cute, cuddly and should be someone’s best friend - but sadly too many dogs are currently walking the tightrope at a Central Queensland pound.

The Livingstone Shire pound is almost at capacity for dogs with homes desperately needed to be found for them before it’s too late.

The dire situation has prompted local animal welfare organisation Capricorn Animal Aid to put out a plea for the public’s help.

“Yeppoon pound is almost full and urgently needs space, but we need more foster carers,” the organisation said.

“If you can help with adopting or fostering any of the dogs marked as available, please contact us ASAP.”

Livingstone Shire Council told this publication that it has the ability to cater for a total of 18 dogs at its pound facilities.

“The council pound is currently close to capacity for dogs,” a council spokeswoman said.

“Council works closely with animal welfare agencies and one of these agencies has been able to assist council with taking several dogs at short notice.”

The spokeswoman said the council had noticed through reviewing statistical data of impoundments, that the length of stays for unclaimed dogs had increased in recent years.

“Council will keep animals for as long as required in every effort to rehome dogs,” she said.

“There is no set time frame for euthanasia as many factors are considered before a dog is euthanised.

“These factors include, behavioural, sickness, animal welfare, and suitability for rehoming.

“Euthanasia is only considered as a last resort or if required by law.”

The council confirmed that so far this year, 11 animals had been euthanised.

“These animals are animals that have been surrendered for euthanasia, dangerous and unsuitable for rehoming,” the spokeswoman said.
