Four under-21 players have been awarded rookie contracts with the CQ Capras’ Intrust Super Cup squad.
Peyton Jenkins, Coby Williamson, Brandon Clarke and Herman Semanufagai are among the 35-member squad in pre-season training under head coach Lionel Harbin.
“It’s very exciting,” Harbin said.
“It’s all about preparing them for this level of football, not just on the field but away from training with things like nutrition and recovery.
“It’s a big jump from under-21s to Intrust Super Cup so we need to know if they can handle it.
“This is all about them learning and developing and growing as players so if the opportunity arises they are ready to go.”
Harbin said it was a great opportunity for the quartet to learn from experienced campaigners such as Jack Madden, Jonus Pearson and Tyler Szepanowki.
Harbin described Jenkins as “an out and out halfback” who was instrumental in the Capras under-18s run to the Mal Meninga Cup semi-final this season.
“He has all the qualities of a good halfback and we’re very keen to see how he progresses,” Harbin said.
“He plays what’s in front of him which you want and is very good for someone so young at playing eyes up footy.”
Harbin said Williamson, who was also part of the Capras 18s this season, was a powerhouse whose versatility was a great asset.
“He’s been really impressive at training; he’s come in and been right up there with a lot of the Cup boys with their testing,” he said.
“He can play in the centres and in the middle as well, at backrow or lock.”
Gatton product Clarke has joined the Capras from the Western Mustangs.
Harbin said he was also making his mark at pre-season training.
“Brandon’s tough and very skilful,” he said.
“He’s a running hooker so he’s always asking questions of the defence.”
Semanufagai joined the Capras under-21s this season from Wellington, New Zealand.
A highly regarded rugby union player, he has made a seamless transition to league.
Harbin said there was plenty to like about the powerful and skilful outside back who has plenty of potential.
