An elderly female has sustained life-threatening injuries while three primary school-aged children have been transported to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on a Central Queensland highway this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the four-vehicle crash near the Richmont Drive intersection, west of the Bouldercombe petrol station, at 3.25pm

Queensland Police Service say the highway will be closed for hours as emergency services attend the crash.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said two fire crews were at the scene, in which four vehicles were involved.

He said one vehicle was on its roof.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said four units were caring for nine patients – one with life-threatening injuries and two others with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The spokesman said the five other patients had minor injuries.

He said three children – two males and a female – had been transported to Rockhampton Hospital with minor injuries in a stable condition.

A QAS spokeswoman provided an update at 5.15pm, advising an elderly female had sustained life-threatening injuries and would not be transported to hospital.

She said the three children were primary school aged and there were two adults who were in a stable condition.

There were still no other details at this stage about the three other patients as of 5.15pm.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the forensic crash unit was expected to attend the scene.

The spokeswoman said the highway will be closed for the rest of the afternoon and potentially into the night.

A Rockhampton Regional Council spokeswoman said council would not be reopening the Razorback Rd, which is undergoing roadworks at the moment, as there are alternative routes available via Poison Creek Road and out through Westwood for people to get home to Mount Morgan this afternoon.

The QAS spokesman said the rescue helicopter service had been tasked to the scene but that had been reviewed and it was no longer required as road transport would be just as fast.
