Central Queensland stars Alenna Whipp and Lillian Yarrow have put themselves “on the radar” after leading performances for the Queensland Country under-17 girls rugby league team.

Hooker Whipp and front rower Yarrow both scored a try in Country’s gutsy 22-20 win over their City counterparts on Saturday.

Whipp finished with 15 tackles, the second highest for the game, while Yarrow topped the hit-ups with 13 and made 97 run metres.

The result was reversed in the boys game, with City running out 52-20 winners against a Country team that included Capras under-18 players Mack Nixon, Elekana Suavai, Tom Powell and Brock Hinds.

Queensland Country girls coach Amanda Ohl, of Rockhampton, said Whipp and Yarrow were outstanding.

“They both had a big impact on the game,” she said.

“They shone the spotlight on themselves in front of some important people so they’re well and truly on the radar now for Queensland representative programs.”

Country came from behind twice, with halfback Emily Bella landing a conversion as the full-time hooter sounded to secure the victory.

Ohl said her players showed plenty of character.

“It was a really strong effort from the girls, they dug deep,” she said.

“We ended up with only two girls on the bench at the end of the game.

“We were bruised and battered but we kept fighting.

“We did it the hard way but we did it and that was the most impressive thing.”

Ohl said Whipp and Yarrow would be pivotal to the Capras under-19 women campaign again next year.

She was also keen to have them training with the senior women’s squad as well, though their age would likely prevent them from playing in the BHP Premiership in 2022.

The Capras women’s first training camp is set for mid-November.
