Social housing tenants are expected to move into 14 new apartments on the Capricorn Coast by the end of the year after work finishes on the $6.5 million build.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon and Keppel MP Brittany Lauga toured the site on Tuesday.

“This is a fantastic project… when it’s all finished these will provide homes for people with a disability, who will finally have access to a fully accessible home, or a senior who may be wanting to downsize,” Ms Scanlon said.

As of March 31, 2022, there were 3904 social housing dwellings in the Central Queensland region and there were 592 applicants on the social housing register, which provides support to people most in need, as of June 2023.

Almost 80 tradies and seven apprentices and trainees have been working on the construction at 11-17 Ivey Street in Taranganba, across from the school, that is expected to be completed by Christmas.

Seven of the homes are built to various levels of disability standards with features including wider doorways and doors and room for moving around in a wheelchair.

Ms Lauga said she was pleased more housing was being delivered.

“There’s nothing more important than having a roof over your head and it’s really, really critical, particularly in Central Queensland, that we can provide that for our community,” she said.

“One thing that a lot of people in the community have talked to me about is the need for disability and equitable access accommodation and housing.”

National firm Paynters were awarded a $6.2 million tender in June 2022 for the construction of the coast units.

Rockhampton business Bauhinia Architects designed the project which includes 10 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom homes.

The block of land was purchased by the State Government in 2006 for $600,000.
